Arsenal are bracing themselves for major changes in the summer as the future of star-men Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil hangs in the balance, although the most drastic shift could come from a managerial aspect.
Arsene Wenger is just months away from the end of his current deal at the Emirates Stadium and could walk after another disappointing campaign that has seen the Gunners fail to compete for the Premier League crown and face an imminent exit from the Round of 16 stage in the Champions League yet again.
Speculation has been rife to suggest who could come in to replace Wenger at Arsenal and former Liverpool midfielder Dietmaar Hamann has backed two names that could impress in North London. Speaking to the Paddy Power Blog, the German said:
‘Arsenal have to face reality to make a decision to not be fooled by mistakes from the past. Arsene Wenger transformed the club and, arguably, changed the entire Premier League. He’ll be as disappointed as anyone at the capitulation [to Bayern Munich] last Wednesday, but now he’s got to decide whether he’s still the best man for the job.’
‘A different manager at Arsenal could get more out of these players. Rafa Benítez and Diego Simeone are managers who could both add great value to that team.’
Backing Atletico Madrid boss Simeone to make an impact is no surprise, given the Argentine has led the Spanish side to a La Liga title and two Champions League finals, but backing Rafael Benitez may ruffle some feathers.
Benitez has of course guided Liverpool and Chelsea to European glory, before a difficult spell with Real Madrid, and is now pushing Newcastle United towards a Premier League return. However, he’s unlikely to be the sort of manager fans are crying out for.
