Glen Johnson has criticised Tottenham Hotspur for allowing Kieran Trippier to join Atletico Madrid in the summer, per talkSPORT.
What’s the word?
Trippier was back in England earlier this week, playing 91 minutes as Atleti knocked holders Liverpool out of the Champions League.
Thus far this season, he has made 26 appearances in all competitions, providing four assists, with Diego Simeone’s men sixth in La Liga, with 45 points.
Spurs, of course, have had to cope with Serge Aurier at right-back, now their sole option in the position after Kyle Walker-Peters was loaned to Southampton in the January transfer window.
And Johnson is shocked that Spurs were so willing to move the England international on. Atletico paid a fee of £20m for the defender.
He said: “I don’t know how he wasn’t in Tottenham’s plans in the first place.
“He was playing very well, the team pretty much needed him at the time, he was playing for England and playing well, he seems like a nice lad as well, from what I hear.
“So it’s surprising that they let him go and let him go so cheap. I think it’s great business from Atletico and I’m sure he’s loving life and is clearly playing well.”
Looks ridiculous
Of course, Trippier played well as Atletico beat Liverpool at Anfield.
They won 3-2 at Anfield, sealing a 4-2 aggregate victory, but the former Burnley man did not play that well in his final season at the club.
His campaign was pockmarked by individual errors, including a comical own goal against Chelsea, and was in and out of the team in the final few weeks of the season, playing in just two of their final six games.
A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?
With Aurier now their only option, though, the decision to sell him looks increasingly clueless.
Recency bias may be playing some part in what Johnson is saying, but he is right.
Spurs made a mistake.
Meanwhile, Spurs fans love this Jose Mourinho decision!
