Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers omitted Emilio Izaguirre from the squad completely for the Old Firm derby defeat to Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday despite not having a natural left-back fit to start the game, and the 32-year-old’s career at Parkhead is now surely over.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the 5ft 10in full-back has largely found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season given he has Kieran Tierney ahead of him in the pecking order, but he has had more of a chance in recent weeks when the Scotland international has been absent through injury.
The Honduras international started five consecutive Scottish Premiership matches including the 4-3 win against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Boxing Day, although he was hauled off at half-time after a shaky first-half display.
Despite that, he still would have fancied his chances of making the XI for the trip to face Steven Gerrard’s men at the weekend, but instead he failed to make the 18-man squad as midfielder Callum McGregor lined up at left-back with Tierney back on the bench but clearly not ready start.
Surely that’s it for Izaguirre?
It has to be.
To not even make the squad when Rodgers didn’t have a recognised left-back to start tells you all you need to know, as well as the fact that the Northern Irishman opted to use a midfielder there who had little experience of playing in that position.
Furthermore, Calvin Miller has only returned to Parkhead following the cancellation of his loan spell with Dundee, which could spell further bad news for Izaguirre.
The 32-year-old has been a decent performer for Celtic in the past, but the latest defeat to Rangers and struggles against Aberdeen only proved to Rodgers that the quality in his team isn’t at the required level, and the Honduran could be a casualty of that.
