Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter to react in frustration after it was revealed that key man Fernandinho may miss Sunday’s match against Southampton, and could also be a doubt for the crunch clash against Liverpool as he looks to build up his match fitness.

The 33-year-old is a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s machine, and makes the champions tick. It is telling that they have lost to both Crystal Palace and Leicester within the space of a week without their Brazilian destroyer in the side, and if he doesn’t return quickly, the title race could be over in January as the gap starts to widen.

It is no secret that Guardiola is desperate to sign a replacement for the ageing defensive midfielder, not because he doesn’t rate him, but because Fernandinho’s fitness is becoming more problematic as he gets older.

The situation is also quite embarrassing for the former Barcelona boss, as the manager of City’s title rivals Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp – ensured that his side wouldn’t endure a crisis like this by signing the likes of Naby Keita and Fabinho back in the summer, as well as addressing another problem area with the £66m signing of Alisson in goal.
