Writing in his column for The Daily Record, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has called on the club to provide clarity on the future of Graeme Murty, warning they risk ‘chaos’ otherwise.
What’s the story?
Murty was appointed as manager on an interim basis to the end of the season in the wake of the Pedro Caixinha dismissal and despite some improvement, pressure has been increasing on the former U20s coach in recent weeks after defeats to Celtic and Kilmarnock.
Whatever happens, what former hero Barry Ferguson is looking for is a decision to be made soon, believing the uncertainty is a big danger to the Light Blues.
Writing for The Daily Record, Ferguson said:
Indecision and doubt. Two words which will cause chaos for Rangers. I believe the Ibrox board are in two minds whether Graeme Murty should be given the job beyond the summer.
Do I think he’ll get the job? No. Would I be happy if he was? I believe he deserves the chance to be a serious candidate.
He’s done just about enough to have a shot at it and he now needs the club to back him. That lack of clarity is the last thing this club needs, it doesn’t help Murty, his players or the most important people, the Rangers fans.
Will the interim Ibrox boss be given the gig beyond the end of the season?
What are his chances of staying on?
Unless Rangers pull something special out of the bag in the closing stages of the season, chiefly the Scottish Cup, the chances of Murty staying on at Ibrox in his current capacity are slim.
Supporters of the Light Blues are looking for a experienced manager to come in and improve their fortunes and although recognising the job Murty has done, many reckon the job is just too much for him at this stage of his career.
It may not be fair though to judge his future prospects without taking into account the entire season, so the uncertainty around the post could continue into the summer.
