According to The Sun, David Brooks is set to be offered a massive new deal by Bournemouth as the 12th-placed club look to fend off interest from Premier League big boys, Manchester United and Spurs – the latter must swoop before this can happen otherwise they risk missing out on their next Dele Alli.
What’s the word?
Well, The Sun reports that the Cherries will dangle a huge pay rise in front of the former Sheffield United man in the hope that he will be persuaded against moving to United or Spurs, both of whom are keen to acquire his services.
Having rejected interest from the Red Devils in the summer as he opted for a switch to the Vitality Stadium, Brooks has impressed in red and black – so much so that the high-ups are willing to more than double the Welshman’s £1m-a-year wage just six months later in an attempt to keep him on the south coast.
The Lilywhites, meanwhile, are perhaps overachieving currently after spending zilch in the summer, but their frugal approach must be thrown out of the window to bring Brooks to White Hart Lane as Mauricio Pochettino could mould the 21-year-old into something truly special.
Dele and David
Alli joined Spurs in 2015 for a fee just shy of £6m and now, nearly four years on, is surely valued in excess of £100m; Pochettino is much credited for the England international’s rise to stardom, having converted the then-fresh-faced teenager into an attacking midfielder or second striker, where he has established himself as one of the most talented young players that Premier League has to offer.
The 22-year-old’s main strength lies in his ability to arrive in the right place and at the right time to tuck away a goal and this is a knack he shares with Brooks, who has chalked up five goals and two assists in 20 appearances this season.
Like Alli, also, the left-footer can be deployed just about anywhere in the midfield and this would make him a great addition to a Spurs side who are soon to be lacking in depth.
The Sun believes that both Spurs and United would happily shell out around £40m for the former Manchester City youth player, although they may have to dig a lot deeper if Bournemouth convince him to sign this new deal – Pochettino and co. must act fast otherwise they will surely be priced out of a move.
