Welsh outfit made round four last seasonInto the third round for 2023-24Shrewsbury next up for Red DragonsWHAT HAPPENED?
The Red Dragons made their way into the fourth round last season, with the impressive scalp of Championship side Coventry City claimed along the way. Premier League-bound Sheffield United ultimately dashed their dreams, courtesy of Billy Sharp, but the Welsh outfit are back in round three for 2023-24 and readying themselves for a meeting with local rivals Shrewsbury Town.

Parkinson has told of what needs to happen in order for another memorable cup run to be taken in – with Wrexham having seen off Yeovil Town 3-0 in the second round: “I said to the lads before the game that everyone remembers Coventry and Sheffield United last year, but we had to work hard to get to that stage – Blyth Spartans away, windy, horrible away game and we had to bring them back here and win the replay. And other games we had to really dig deep. Today was one of those games where we get a great draw – Shrewsbury away, because that is a local derby and everyone is excited about that. We’ve got to earn the right to get there, so I’m pleased we have got through today. We can put the FA Cup on the back burner, concentrate on the league and go to Shrewsbury in good spirit.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Parkinson added on seeing goals from Ollie Palmer, Andy Cannon and Sam Dalby down National League South leaders Yeovil: “I thought it was a professional performance from us. These games are always difficult because Yeovil have got nothing to lose. They had a lot of possession first half, we were patient that the moments would come and second half we couldn’t quite find that final pass to kill the game off until the last minute. Credit to Yeovil for that because when you are top of the league in your division, you have obviously got a certain spirit about you and pride, and they played that way in the second period and had a real go. We knew it would be difficult, these games are never easy, and very pleased to progress through to round three.”

Wrexham have seven games to take in before facing Shrewsbury in early January, with an EFL Trophy clash with Burton Albion next on the agenda. League Two will then take centre stage, with the Red Dragons currently sat second in the fourth tier table – five points adrift of Stockport but occupying an automatic promotion spot.
