Arsenal advanced through to the knockout stages of the Europa League as group winners despite losing 1-0 to FC Cologne in Germany on Thursday night, but Gunners fans weren’t impressed with Mathieu Debuchy’s performance.
Even though the Frenchman has primarily been a right-back throughout his career, he was selected as a right-sided central defender in a back three against the Bundesliga outfit, who have failed to win any of their 12 German top flight matches this season.
Perhaps even more confusing was the fact that Calum Chambers – who has often featured at centre-back – played in a right wing-back role.
Debuchy was something of an unfortunate party as he was adjudged to be the guilty player in what appeared to be a dubious second-half penalty decision, which turned out to be the difference between the two clubs on the night.
Arsenal supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media, and while one said ‘he has no future with the Gunners’, another said he ‘should be ashamed of his performance’.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
