There is no doubt that Harry Kane’s presence on the pitch would be appreciated when Tottenham face Liverpool in Saturday’s Champions League final.
But with it now being over a year since he truly looked like himself, one has to wonder if a more prolonged rest would allow Kane to avoid another injury-prone season. Christy Maylan said on The Fixture in Focus Podcast that starting Kane in Saturday’s Champions League final could jeopardise his preparation for next season.
“If you enter that rest period with issues, then it kind of eats up how much natural rest time he would have. So I think there is still a danger if he isn’t quite right and he plays in this game, then if he is still not right and plays in the Nations League, he won’t be quite at the level everyone else is when they return for preseason,” Christy said on the latest episode, looking at both of this week’s European finals.
However, it appears necessary for him to start for Spurs to upset Liverpool. The Reds’ 89 goals in the Premier League this year were second only to champions Man City as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah finished level in the race for the Golden Boot – Kane was the only Spurs player to get close to their totals.
If there was ever a game to risk it, it’s this one. But with the Nations League coming up and so many more battles to be had in what should be a long and successful career, is it actually in Tottenham or Kane’s interests for him to start on Saturday?
